There are several ways to get your music on iTunes.
You can obviously fill out an online application at the Apple website site directly, but its going to be a little difficult for most to meet all of the requirements.
If you DO meet all requirements, you can sign up to sell your music by working directly with Apple. However, in most cases, you will be working through an aggregator.
Aggregators are 3rd party companies that have a partnership with Apple / iTunes and can help you meet technical requirements, deliver and manage your content, and assist with marketing efforts.
There are alots of aggregators that make it very easy for you to upload & sell your songs & albums, all usually within 48-72 hours!
You can work with any aggregator listed below, regardless of your location. Below is a list of the most popular aggregators:
- Virtual Label
- INgrooves / Fontana
- Redeye Distribution
- The Orchard
- Believe Digital
Things to consider:
Before you sign up with an aggregator and start uploading your songs and working your way through their checkout, there are several things that you should pay attention to & do first.
Song Quality – You’ll definitely want your song(s) to be mastered, you don’t want to sell music that has volume or mixing issues. Your fans will notice, especially since most music is played back to back on playlists. Make sure if you purchase or a create a beat and then record vocals to it, that you always master the track if you intend to sell it or gain radio play. Otherwise, if its just for a mixtape, then you dont have to worry so much.
Artwork – Have good quality artwork ready to post with your song(s) or album. You are going to want to have 600×600 sized covers.
Text & Links – Have all of your website, social networking links, copyright info, bio/profile information handy and ready to copy/paste. This will save you a lot of time and avoid session timeouts as you try to post your song(s).
