How To Do Mixtape Promotion

Promotion is very important, you definitely want to get your mixtape out to as many websites out there as possible.

It takes a lot of time, but it’s well worth it.

If you put in a lot of hard work into your joints, then you definitely want to get some good promo.

Hopefully this article will help you out, give you some ideas and good resources to get started!

1.  Hire a DJ

Once you finish recording to the instrumental beats and/or arranging all of your songs, first step should be to hire a radio station DJ or well known DJ to host your mixtape. The cost for a DJ to host your mixtape should range between $150 and $15k depending on who it is of course, but you can always negotiate.

  • It is good to pay them 50% up front and the rest on completion (use PayPal if possible).
  • Be sure to ask what services will be provided aside from hosting such as any DJ mixing/blending, drops/shout outs or DJ promotion services (radio spins, social media, etc).
  • See if they can promote your mixtape on sites like DatPiff.com or LiveMixtapes.com at the very least.
  • You don’t have to get a DJ to host your mixtape, but if you do, you will be taken more serious as an artist.

2.  Use good Graphics

Second step is to hire a good graphics artist to create you some quality front and back covers. The price for this ranges between $75 to $350 and the cover should be at least 1000px by 1000px. A good mixtape cover can get you a lot of attention. The higher quality resolution the better. You should also get a promo flyer done for your mixtape.

  • Ask to see their portfolio or examples before you hire them
  • Find out how many revisions you get (making extra changes for you)
  • It is good to pay them 50% up front and the rest on completion (use PayPal if possible).

Alternatively, you can also purchase premade cover art.

3.  Set a release date

Post the flyer or front cover of your mixtape on your website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter letting everyone know that your mixtape is coming. Use the front cover as your promo.  Setting a release date 2-3 weeks out works well as it helps build up some hype.  Some mixtape sites let you use a countdown page.   If your website uses WordPress, you can also use a countdown plugin.

4.  Post to the Mixtape sites

When its time to drop, post your mixtape on as many good sites as possible like:

  • DatPiff.com
  • MixtapeHub.com
  • Spinrilla.com
  • HotNewHipHop.com
  • SoundCloud.com
  • AudioMack.com
  • MixtapeTorrent.com
  • AllMixtapeLinks.com
  • Coast2CoastMixtapes.com (DJ’s usually only have access)
  • Indy.LiveMixtapes.Com (DJ’s usually only have access)
  • RobLunaMusic.com (that’s right, artist spotlight right here!)

Other good mixtape promo sites are:

  • ReverbNation.com
  • 8Tracks.com
  • BandCamp.com
  • MixCloud.com
  • HulkShare.com
  • BlogSpot.com
  • DropBox.com
  • Tumblr.com

There are also plenty of “One-Click hosting” sites like:

  • RapidGator.Net
  • HotFile.com
  • ZippyShare.com
  • DepositFiles.com

5.  Use Mixtape Videos

You can easily turn your mixtape into a video.  All you really need to do is get a free program like “Window Movie Maker”.  Then just use the front cover of your mixtape with all your mixtape tracks as the audio.

Make a video of your Mixtape and put it up on sites like:

  • YouTube.com
  • Vimeo.com
  • WorldStarHipHop.com

Doing this will extend your promo reach to MILLIONS of possible viewers.

6.  Social Media

Share links to your mixtape on social networking sites like Facebook, Facebook Groups, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Reddit, Digg, MySpace, etc.

Don’t waste your time “buying views” or “buying followers“.  Doing this can risk getting your mixtape taken down  or account suspended and plus it’s easy to spot fake followers – it won’t make you look good at all.
